Now I'm the first to acknowledge that I do not know a lot
about the role of the Salvation Army within the Australian Army,
but what little I do know is added at the top.
If you know more, please contact REMLR via e-mail or the
forums.
The Salvation Army has long been a supporter
of the troops who serve in the Australian Defence Forces. The
vehicles that they have used to do this have often been of the
same or similar specification to the Army's own vehicles to
aid in keeping them running.
All service personnel, whether they are out for a
day at a weapons range on a defence base, or on exercise
somewhere remote in the Australian bush... or even on the
"two-way range" in a war zone... all welcome the sight of "The
Sallyman".
The sight of the approaching Sallyman is usually a Very Good
Thing to a Digger - its time to have a smoko, a chat and a
drink.
Various Land Rovers have seen service in the Salvation Army;
from the Series 2 109in panel vans through to the Defender 130in
chassis-cabs with specialised 'canteen' bodies. Even a special
build of Perentie 110in Land Rovers have been used. A number of
these Perentie 110 vehicles are now known to be in civilian
hands.
Series 2 Vehicles
These vehicles are seen in photos of Army life in various
locations around Australia, as well as deployed in Vietnam. The
below are AWM photos depicting the Salvation Army in Vietnam. In
many of the photos the Salvos are operating a canteen out of the
vehicle. Although with some army parts, it appears to be a
civilian specification vehicle.
