Series 2A FFR - Pedr H. (mem038)

Many ex-military Land-Rover Fitted For Wireless (F.F.W.), Fitted For Transceiver (F.F.T.), and Fitted For Radio (F.F.R.) restorers have to search a heap swapmeets to collect the correct era radio gear. This information is aimed at assisting that job... there is some text from Phillip H. (mem118) in W.A. and some photos and scans from Ross O. (mem112) in S.A..

Terminology:

  • H.F. -- High Frequency. Term refers to radio frequency band (or spectrum), measured by Megahertz, ranging from 3Mhz to 30Mhz.
  • V.H.F. -- Very High Frequency. Term refers to R.F. band ranging from 30Mhz to 300Mhz.
  • A.T.U. -- Aerial Tuning Unit. The receiver and transmitter wireless sets must be tuned efficiently to the aerial in use at the time. Differing types of aerial require different tuning.
  • P.S.U. -- Power Supply Unit. Varying DC voltages are required for 'valve' wireless gear. While a P.S.U. input DC voltage does not vary (usually 24vDC) the output of a P.S.U. is various DC voltages to drive different gear. Larkspur radio gear requires a P.S.U. with 24vDC input power and various outputs.
  • C11 -- H.F. transmitter only. High power.
  • R210 -- H.F. receiver only.
  • C11/R210 -- Combined sets make up a H.F. receiver/transmitter station.
  • C42 -- V.H.F. receiver/transmitter. Covers only a part of the V.H.F. band. High power.
  • C45 -- As above. Covers a different part of the V.H.F. band than the C42.
  • B47 -- V.H.F. receiver/transmitter. Covers only a part of the V.H.F. band but is the same coverage as C42. Low power.
  • B48 -- As above. Covers the same as C45. Low power.
  • LT -- Low Tension.
  • Larx -- Larkspur radio gear.
  • Dogbone -- Slang for the patch cable that fits from the P.S.U. to the wireless set.
