The Registry Of Ex-Military Land-Rovers Au, NZ, etc

Land Rover Contracts and
Vehicle Numbers

Whilst RAN records are scattered amongst Commonwealth Registrations, and the older RAAF vehicle Registration Ledgers are thought to have been lost, the vast majority of Australian Army Vehicle Registration Ledgers are preserved at either the Australian War Memorial, or the Army Museum Bandiana. Of course more modern records are kept electronically, however for the Series 2, 2a and 3 fleets of Land Rovers we can establish through those ledgers and contract information a fairly precise idea of how many vehicles were made of any given type were ordered and made.

The December 1988 issue of Overlander provided a combined total for Series 2 and 2A purchased by the AMF. It stated that the total was 6,626 units supplied in both 88" and 109" types between "16.12.58" and "9/71". Allowing for the fact that the Australian Army definitely purchased some replacement chassis (for repairs), and that the RAAF purchased a number of series 2a Military Specification vehicles, the Overlander figure could be about right.

The ARN Ledgers being digitised since 2003 show a total of 6582 Series 2 & 2A Army Land-Rovers purchased between "16.12.58" and "2/72". by the Army, and so far only 20 RAAF units have been confirmed from Photographs.  Bringing a total of 6602 vs the 6626 quoted by Overlander.

Late in 2013 REMLR was sent some fascinating information about Military Land Rover Production in Australia. The information is courtesy of the BMC-Leyland Australia Heritage Group that are researching and collecting information for a second book which is to be written about PMC. Their first book was titled, Building cars in Australia : Morris, Austin, BMC and Leyland 1950 - 1975 and is to be commended to anyone with an interest in what transpired over that period with the companies mentioned.

Series Land Rover Totals to 7/3/2014

Given the occasional oddity or mistake in the numbers numbers, and an error margin of a vehicle here or there, our database holds far and away the majority of military type Land Rover's (RAAF and Army), and in the series 2 88 in, we are fairly close to spot on, same with the Series 3 109's. There are a few that may be missing in the LWB Series II and IIa 109's, however we suspect that those are RAAF vehicles.
