The Series 3 Ambulance variant
Initially thought to be a creature of myth, information over the last couple of years leading up to 2010 indicated that one was indeed made. Entries in the recently found Series 3 registration books revealed that one did indeed enter service. Rumor had it that one had been made from the body of a series 2a Ambulance mounted on to a Series 3 Chassis.
In 2010 we received the information, and photos, to show that the Series 3 Ambulance was indeed a vehicle built by Leyland Australia.
These are polaroid photos so it's amazing that they have survived in such good condition. These photos were taken outside the PMC production line. All appear to be of the same vehicle, however we do not know for sure if there was only one, or more, at this stage.
The interior shot at first glance appears to have a 2A dash, but when you zoom right in, it's an additional instrument panel with two smaller gauges.
A number of other differences between the Series 2a and 3 ambulances are also apparent. The sirens have been fitted on the Bush ar, the exhaust is a frontal FFR / Workshop type, the taillights are certainly different to a regular series 3, the interior fittings appear to be mostly the same, although it looks like the blower box has been combines with storage for a collapsible stretcher?
Information recieved points to 101 Field Workshop in 1991 tho appear to have had a series 3 Ambulance converted to an electronic repair vehicle. However this was thought to have ben old off soon after and replaced with a 6x6 Perentie.
27-652 is one known series 3 Ambulance that had chassis number 94315886C. This was around 1976 - 1977.
