6 Tropical Trials
Evaluation Vehicles - 1964
These photos were taken by Glen Hutley and the information
provided below details his recollections.
These vehicles were not actually prototypes, but
pre-run evaluation vehicles. They were subjected to 6 months testing
in tropical conditions around Innisfail. The 6x6 trucks were fitted
with Mk3 cabs (Note inconsistent bridging signs) and wired extensively
to measure temperatures at every concievable point.
The 6x6 cargo was loaded with 5 tons and towed an
ex WW11 semi articulated trailer on a dolly converter (effectively making
the trailer a dog trailer) from Melb to Innisfail. The dump was loaded
with 5 tons of aggregate (checked daily) and towed a 5.5" artillery
piece. (one of a kind fitted with air brakes)
Another vehicle travelling with this group was a Series 2 Land Rover Wrecker conversion, the first one in fact. Once it had posted for it;s ADE photos she did a trip to Innisfail with 6 Tropical Trials along with the pre production International 6x6 cargo and dump variants and other varied equipment including a couple of light recce tracked vehicles to replace the Ferret (which were not accepted) and also a S2a COE 1 ton Land rover (which also was not accepted.)
In later years
Tropical Trials became a permanent unit with a base at Cowley Beach
that is still partially operating today.
